Aging healthfully

The holiday calendar in Japan has "Keiro no hi," or Seniors' Day, that celebrates the wisdom, health and accomplishments of the elderly. It it is the third Monday of September (TODAY!).

So yesterday my church had a luncheon for seniors over 70, which included a bento box of salad, rice, pickles, seitan, seaweed, etc., and fruit salad for dessert, entertainment, and a small gift the children's church kids made. Lots of visiting amongst old-time friends and the younger generations.

The day serves as a reminder not only to care for the elderly, but also to take care of oneself. From a dentist's perspective, that means regular dental care for healthy gums which will reduce risk of heart attacks and strokes, and more teeth to chew your food with for improved digestion and a joyful smile.
